Get to Know… April Bourommavong

“Growing up in a refugee family that was resettled in Charlotte, the Advocacy Center’s mission of pursuing justice for those in need resonates deeply with me. I work at the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy to support and empower fellow community members so that they are equipped to thrive.

Experience

  • April handles the intake for both the N.C. Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic and Legal Services for the Elderly.
  • Prior to joining the Advocacy Center in October 2023 as a NC Medicaid Ombudsman and then becoming a Health Insurance Navigator in January 2025, April volunteered at multiple naturalization workshops across the state to help community members apply for citizenship and assisted with voter outreach initiatives in immigrant communities.

Education

  • University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a Second Major in Global Studies and a Minor in Health and Society
  • North Carolina Notary Public Certification
