Get to Know… Maya Barnhart

“I began my journey with the Advocacy Center because I wanted to have more hands-on experience serving the community, especially for a demographic of individuals who are vulnerable due to the systems put in place. I also wanted to grow more as an individual and expand my knowledge on all areas of law and validate the many different perspectives that members in the community have to share.”

Experience

  • Maya handles the client-facing work in the Community Empowerment Project, while also assisting attorneys in overseeing large caseloads and high volumes of clients, training pro bono attorneys, preparing legal documents, and more. She also supports the team in providing necessary re-entry work for previously criminally-justice involved individuals in the community. Before that, Maya provided legal support and assistance to many of our veteran clients.
  • Before joining the Advocacy Center in March 2023, Maya worked as a Title Specialist at McMichael Taylor Gray LLC Firm. Prior to working at that firm, Maya had experience tutoring lower income middle and high school children as well as doing work for a local Asheville grassroots organization called Different World.
