Senior Attorney, Consumer Protection Program 

Leah Kane is the Senior attorney in the Consumer Protection Program at Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy.

Kane received her J.D. from Emory University School of Law and her B.A. in history from Colgate University. Commitment to high-quality advocacy on behalf of people living with low-income has permeated her career, through work as a public defender, as a legal services attorney handling consumer, disability and civil rights cases, as an employment discrimination attorney, and as a legal educator. Prior to joining Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy in 2013, she was an assistant federal defender in Charlotte working on an appellate/habeas project.  She relocated to North Carolina from Nevada, where she a Lawyering Process Professor at University of Nevada, Las Vegas Boyd School of Law for five years and also taught Evidence and Juvenile Justice Clinic.  Prior to that Kane worked as litigation attorney with the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, handling consumer fraud, class actions, ADA, and housing discrimination cases, and as an associate attorney at England Law Office, handling complex employment discrimination and contract dispute matters. Kane began her career as an assistant public defender in Palm Beach County, Florida, where she gained significant felony jury trial experience. 

Kane is a member of the Mecklenburg County Bar District Grievance Committee, NC State Bar CLE Board and the National Association of Consumer Attorneys’ Standing Ethics Committee.  Previously, she chaired the Nevada State Bar’s Publications Committee, and was selected as a member of the Nevada Supreme Court Task Force on Racial, Economic, and Gender Bias in the Justice System.  In her spare time she enjoys hiking, kayaking, and spending time with family, friends, and dogs.
