Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy, non‑profit provider of civil legal assistance to low-income people in the Charlotte region, seeks a full-time Outreach/Administrative Assistant to support its Family Support and Health Care Program, including its Health Insurance Navigator Project, Medical Legal Partnership, and Public Charge Campaign. The position lasts through December 2020 (with the possibility of extension). Preference will be given for candidates with Spanish language proficiency.
This temporary position will assist permanent staff in providing outreach, education, health care navigation services, and legal advice and representation to low income communities in accessing health care coverage and other public benefits.
The Advocacy Center is committed to aggressive advocacy on behalf of low-income people in many areas of law and in all forums in which their rights and interests are determined. Advocacy Center attorneys give legal advice, represent individual low-income clients in state and federal courts and administrative agencies, provide community legal education, participate in community events, assist other agencies serving low-income people and engage in class action litigation and in legislative, administrative and other systemic advocacy projects and activities.
The Advocacy Center is funded by contributions from individuals and law firms, the United Way of Central Carolinas, grants from federal, state and local government agencies, private foundation grants and client fees but receives no Legal Services Corporation funds.
Qualifications: college degree or relevant experience; commitment to work with low-income individuals and underserved communities; proficient oral and written communication; self‑motivated and dependable. Proficiency in Spanish is preferred but not required.
Salary: $19.25/hour + depending on experience; no paid leave or benefits.

The Family Support and Health Care Program works to ensure low-income children, seniors, people living with disabilities, veterans, immigrants and their families have access to health care and public services. The program is designed both to obtain specific relief for the individuals and families who contact the program for assistance, and also to utilize systemic advocacy strategies to change the rules, procedures and practices of federal and state agencies to ensure access to health care and public services for all affected.
