Edward Byron

Senior Attorney, Consumer Protection Program

Edward Byron is a senior attorney at Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy in the Consumer Protection Program. In his role, Byron provides direct legal assistance to individuals affected by a wide range of unfair and predatory business practices. Byron has successfully represented individuals in all state trial court divisions, the state appellate court, and in federal bankruptcy court. Byron has also been invited to present CLEs to attorneys on a variety of consumer protection related topics.

Byron earned a B.A. in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Accounting from the Kenan Flagler School of Business, also at UNC-Chapel Hill. After graduation, he worked as a CPA at a Big Four accounting firm in New York City where he audited the financial statements of multinational public companies.

Byron received his J.D. magna cum laude from the Charlotte School of Law in 2012. During law school, Byron interned with the in-house legal department at Duke Energy Corporation and at the Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office. It was there that he first saw the challenges economically disadvantaged people face in the court system.

Before joining Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy in June 2013, Byron was a fellow at Legal Aid of North Carolina in the housing division. At Legal Aid, Byron defended clients against illegal evictions and enforced tenants’ rights to habitable housing. In his current role, Byron enjoys the opportunity to apply his financial and accounting knowledge and his legal skills to help financially vulnerable families maintain their economic well-being.

Byron currently serves on the Board of Directors of Self-Help Credit Union. In 2018, he was selected to the Mecklenburg County Bar’s prestigious Bar Leadership Institute. Byron is a member of the National Association of Consumer Advocates and the Mecklenburg County Bar’s Continuing Legal Education Committee. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children.
